Orlando Heats Up Nightly at Treasure Tavern Dinner Comedy Show

The Official Ticket Center Inc. ~ It’s time to add spice to Orlando’s dinner-show scene. That’s the thinking behind Treasure Tavern, a new adults-only entry into the kid-happy marketplace. The concept is to present a mature, laid-back variety show in an intimate setting for folks 18 years old and up.

Don’t expect a stripper pole. It’s more like a bawdy cabaret, packed with double entendres.

“We’re not going to use the F word, but we’re going to take it up to that edge without falling over,” says creative director Eddie Diaz.

Our first this-is-not-your-grandfather’s-dinner-show moment on a recent visit featured a member of the comedy troupe mistaking birth-control pills for dinner mints. More followed, including the use of an enormous pepper grinder as a suggestive prop and a very long song with lyrics that played off a euphemism for a sexual act.

If you were in on the joke, well, that song was filthy.

How filthy? A friend said she would not have known what the song was about if she hadn’t seen the term in a Chris Rock comedy special. Yep, that filthy. (Keep reading for a clue.)

Treasure Tavern is an offshoot of Pirate’s Dinner Adventure, an International Drive dinner-show staple, but its tone isn’t overly swashbuckler. The tavern’s back story is that it once was a bordello. The decor revolves around rum barrels and wall hangings said to be gifts to Gretta, our hostess and mistress of ceremonies.

“Gretta, as the owner of the tavern, has met many men,” Diaz says. “These are gifts and tokens of appreciation from different people in the past.”

Along the walls are fans, statues, captain’s wheels and paintings — including one of a cat smoking a cigarette.

“We wanted to go with a worldly feel, so it has elements from Africa, it has elements from Asia, and there are elements that are more nautical,” Diaz says.

The atmosphere made me recall the look of the Adventurers Club, the now-shuttered nightclub at Disney World’s Pleasure Island. The reading of the tavern’s creed reinforced that, but Diaz says the influences came from a variety of venues, including the old Rosie O’Grady’s in downtown Orlando, Cirque du Soleil and Teatro Storvandre, a European cabaret and circus.

Gretta introduces several acts that wind through the three-course meal. The current lineup of entertainers has an international flair and includes acrobats, quick-change artists, a contortionist, a silent comic named Poopsie, a couple of puppets and an excellent improv troupe. Gretta sings and is joined by six “rum girls” on the stage, which rises and lowers to help folks join in racy interactive bits.

The menu includes (clue alert) tossed salad, prime rib, mashed potatoes, asparagus and opera cake, a chocolate and coffee butter cream concoction. A vegetarian alternative is available.

One more dinner-show twist: Treasure Tavern provides eating utensils — no slurping bouillabaisse from the side of a bowl. In fact, it’s a full place setting with golden forks and a charger.

“The china is to die for,” Diaz says.

That’s part of the upscale strategy, along with a dress code that outlaws shorts and tank tops.

“Part of the creative process was to find elements that add a little more elegance to the place,” Diaz says.

Elegance and intimacy — the tavern seats about 200 customers, as opposed to the nearly 1,000 seats at the pirate show — are selling points, but so are the mature elements. It’s easy to imagine this kind of respite is needed following an urchin-filled flight to Orlando.

“This is an environment where you don’t have to worry about that,” Diaz says.
