Sea World Orlando certainly has a reason to celebrate World Penguin Day. On the Sea World Parks and Entertainment Blog, they share with us an amazing story – one that is also featured in the Penguin Encounter exhibit at the park. On June 23, 2000, 300 tons of fuel oil spilled into the waters off of Cape Town, South Africa. The spill was off the shore of two islands where more than 75,000 African penguins call home. SeaWorld along with other international organizations mobilized to South Africa to help implement a massive rescue mission. And in less than 30 days, nearly 20,000 birds were rescued, cleaned and released in this massive effort. Truly Amazing!
Sea World Team Members work every day to ensure the well-being of this incredible species.
Here are some Penguin Fun Facts:
· To date, scientists recognize 17 different species of penguins, and they all live south of the equator, from the icy waters of Antarctica to the tropical Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador.
· Penguins are specialized marine birds adapted to living at sea.. Even though they have wings, their paddle-like flippers are used for swimming, not flying.
· The Sea World parks in Orlando, San Antonio and San Diego are home to nine species of penguins, all of which have successfully reproduced.
And if you haven’t gotten enough of these furry friends, you can go behind-the-scenes of Penguin Encounter on the Penguin Spotlight Tour, where you can hear first-hand from their animal care experts about what it takes to care for these unique birds.
