Walkabout Way – Featuring Kangaroos

Busch Gardens Tampa announced today that a new area dedicated to Australian animals will open Monday. Walkabout Way features kangaroos and wallabies and you’ll have the chance to pet and feed them, too!

The new area is located in the park’s Bird Gardens. There, you’ll meander down a sidewalk with kangaroos on either side of you behind a wooden fence, and wallabies potentially hopping right along your pathway.

Throughout the day, you can also hand-feed the animals. There will be scheduled feedings a few times each day. For $5, you get a cup of food and can have the animals feeding right out of your hand. But note, the area is for ages 5 and older.  In addition to the roos and wallabies, Walkabout Way will also include other Australian species, including magpie geese and Australian black swans. There’s also the Kookaburra’s Nest, a free-flight aviary in Walkabout Way that will feature — what else –kookaburras!

An education station there offers up-close encounters with Busch Gardens Florida park’s animal ambassadors, ranging from Australian parrots, a tawny frogmouth, cockatoos, among other exotic animals that share an important message of conservation.

Busch Gardens Tampa has revealed (kind of) their Howl-o-Scream 2010 theme.  Although there aren’t really any details on the website, it seems as though there is going to be a concert theme – the “most electrifying” HoS ever, apparently.   Tickets are already available for pre-sale and the schedule has been posted.  And yes, we will probably be offering Discount Howl-o-Scream Tickets, so be on the look out!

There will be a Freaky Preview on September 24th and 25th.  7:30 pm – 1:00 am.  HoS officially begins September 30th and runs through Halloween night.  The event hours are:  Thursdays 7:30 pm – 1:00 am; Fridays and Saturdays 7:30 pm – 2:00 am; and Halloween Night 7:30 pm – 1:00 am.

Busch Gardens Tampa in Florida is amping up the fun in 2010 during their Summer Nights seasonal event starting June 11th and running through August 15th.  Guests will enjoy extended hours at the park, with more contemporary entertainment, more special effects, and more reasons to stay and play! 

Park hours for Summer Nights will be extended until 9:00 pm Sundays through Thursdays and until 10:00 pm Fridays and Saturdays.  Summer Nights will be included with general park admission and with your purchase of Discount Busch Gardens Tickets.

New this year, Busch Gardens will feature Kinetix, a high-energy stage show taking place every night at 9:00 pm at Gwazi Park.  Kinetix brings together live musicians, singers, dancers, and artists from around the world for an original, non-stop 30-minute contemporary rock experience that delivers awesome lighting effects, modern music and high-energy performances.

Busch Gardens’ world-class rides will be amplified this summer with pulsating sights and sounds to intensify each experience.  Thrill rides and coasters, such as Sheikra, will incorporate strobe lights, black lights, music, and other special effects for an even bigger thrill – all while blanketed in the night!  Even the carousel will be amped up with a disco ball, and the Serengeti Express will be aglow as it chugs around the park.

Each night, DJs located throughout the park will be playing party songs and inviting families to dance and sing along.  In fact, every Friday and Saturday night, guests will be invited to display their most impressive dance moves in the Dance Challenge.  The best dancers will be selected each Friday and Saturday night to compete in a dance off at 7:00 pm at Desert Grill – three rounds that challenge them to a variety of dance styles.

My sister and I, trying out the new Omaka Rocka attraction at Aquatica!

Aquatica Water Park by Sea World Orlando recently opened a new water slide – Omaka Rocka!  The new attraction was designed to imitate the sensations one would feel on a BMX half-pipe.  Last week, my sister and I visited Aquatica (with our shiny new annual passes), and our first stop was Omaka Rocka!  Keep reading for my personal review and some video footage.

First of all, despite earlier rumors that Omaka Rocka would be a dual-rider slide (and thus serve to increase capacity for the attraction,) there were only single-rider tubes available.  The queue line for Omaka Rocka is to the right of the queue line of Whanau Way, and the tubes for each slide are different colors and are kept in separate areas, to avoid confusion.  Once you grab a tube, however, the lines converge onto a single platform, with riders for Whanau Way lining up on the left and riders for Omaka Rocka on the right. 

The Omaka Rocka slides are located on the first platform you reach – there are two slides, with one lifeguard holding down the fort.  A green light tells you when to push off.  Despite there only being a single-rider option, the line moved quite fast, with riders on each slide alternating quickly.

The attraction was quite fun, although it is my personal belief that the half-pipe sensation was not quite what they were probably shooting for when they designed it.  There are a few mini-waterfall effects, keeping you nice and cool on the slide, and also mini humps that send you bouncing along inside the tube.  The half-pipe portions of the slide were not very effective – there was some slight rocking back and forth along the sides of the half-pipe tubes, but not enough to elicit any kind of thrilling sensation.  However, the slide was one of the longer enclosed attractions at the park and it was certainly a blast.  In fact, we went on it again before leaving the park because we liked it so much.  I’d have to say, my personal favorite is still Tamauta Racer – now that’s a thrilling water slide!

Learning about injured manatee rescue efforts made by Sea World

The Behind-the-Scenes Tour starts out in the North support area, behind Dolphin Cove, where rehabiliation efforts take place.  Guests will learn about various conservation efforts, and will be encouraged to be aware of the major plights these animals suffer.  For example, one of the most common causes of sea turtle injury is getting caught in plastic grocery bags – we were encouraged to recycle our plastic bags, and to invest in canvas reusable bags (which are sold at major grocery chains for only about $1 each.) 

At the rehab facility, guests will find sea turtles, dolphins, and manatees, most of which have been injured and rescued by the Sea World Animal Care Specialists.  Keep in mind, this portion of the tour will vary, given that the rehab center will be home to different animals at different times.  There have been numerous success stories over the past year involving manatees who were rescued due to cold stress after a particularly chilly winter season, and were then released safely back into the wild once they had fully recovered.  Learn about Mossback and her calf’s safe return to the wild on our blog.

Guests will learn about common shark misconceptions.

Next, we went behind-the-scenes at Shark Encounter.  (On our way, we drove under the Kraken roller coaster, which was a nifty little bonus!) Here, guests will learn about common misconceptions people have about sharks -such as the myth that all sharks are huge, monstrous beasts, who will attack a human any chance they get.  In fact, sharks come in all sorts of sizes, and sharks do not typically attack humans.  However, they do have very poor eyesight, so when they are looking for food, sometimes they can mistake a human for another sea creature.  If a shark is looking up at the surface of a water with the sun high in the sky, all their eyes will eprceive are different shaped shadows.  Check out this cool picture:

Guests will also get the chance to touch a white-spotted bamboo shark, which can grow up to 3 feet in length.  This portion of the tour is great for kids, because they can tell all of their friends they touched a shark, without things getting too scary.  The small sharks are in a normal sized aquarium and they kind of feel just feel like touching a snake underwater. 

It was extremely interesting to learn that there are only 60 to 80 attackes on humans by parks in a year throughout the entire world – and of those, only 10 result in death.  New Smyrna Beach holds the record for the most shark attacks.  In comparison, 1,000,000 humans die each year from mosquitos, due to transmission of deadly diseases.  Meanwhile, 100,000,000 sharks are killed each year by humans. 

We have a tendency to eradicate things we’re scared of or we don’t know anything about, like snakes or bees or sharks.  But, these animals all serve vital functions in maintaining balance in our world and they are key to the sustainability of the environment.  As such, education and awareness are extrememly important.

Back on the bus!  We continued learning about the dangers of over-fishing certain populations of fish and shark.  In addition to some fish containing high levels of mercury or toxins, we could negatively impact ocean populations.  If we over-fish the sharks, then the octupus (who are a major food source for sharks) will over populate.  Then, they’ll eat all of the lobsters, and who wants to live in a world without lobsters?!?  The lesson? Be aware and be careful when fishing.

We also learned about something horrid called Finning.  In some other countries, it is common for individuals to catch sharks, cut off their fins, and then throw them back into the water to die a slow and painful death.  The reason they cite?  The sharks take up too much room on the boat and they want more room for more fins.  They dry the fins and make a soup, which can be sold for 50 to 100 bucks a cup.  The interesting bit of this is that the flavor doesn’t even come from the fins, but the seasonings.

Our next stop was Wild Arctic, where we checked out the private Polar Bear Dens.  Apparently, for each animal at Wild Arctic, there is a back closed off area, where the animals can take a reprieve from being on display and in some instance, interact with their fellow kind.  There are five different polar bear areas, and the bears are rotated through each, with only one of the areas visible to the public.  Each bear will be in the public display about once a day, and they are usually solitary animals.  Polar bear cubs are only cared for for about 2 to 3 years.  There is a brother and sister pair who spend some time together every once in a while, but as this goes against their natural isntincts, their interactions are kept to a minimum.

The polar bears are trained to an extent – they respond to their names and can participate in specific behaviors, kind of like a pet dog.  They have black skin with clear fur.  Surprisingly, they can live in climates with up to 90 degree weather – they lose or gain weight to regulate their temperature.   For example, in the winter, they’ll eat fatty animals like seals or baluga whales to put on some insulation for the cold weather.  This alos means that the hunting of these animals would certainly negatively affect polar bear populations. 

Another interesting fact about how our actions affect polar bears – for the first time in history, we have seen evidence that polar bears are drowning.  In order to get to a food source, polar bears sometimes have to swim acorss icy lakes and rivers.  Because they are such large creatures and not excellent swimmer, they rest on large pieces of ice during their trek.  However, due to climate changes over the years, much of which has been caused by human pollution, there are less and less ice caps for them to rest on, so they drown on their quest for food.  Some polar bear carcasses have been found in the artic that have been so riddled with toxins and chemical waste, they are labeled and disposed of  as if they were toxic waste.

We got to touch a sample of polar bear fur, which was not as soft as I thought it would be.  It was actually quite rough and scratchy!

Magellanic Penguins!

The next stop on the tour is the Avian Research Area, where we got to meet and touch a Megellanic Penguin - which are interestingly a warm weather species, existing in about 60 degree weather.  We learned a ton about this species of penguin.  For example, the baby penguins are named when they are first born, but male and female babies look exactly the same.  So, a few months later, once gender tests come back, it turns out little Mario is actually a girl!  Many of the penguin have typical names of the opposite sex.  Another interesting story was about Marion and Penny, who nest together year after year.  Most penguins will mate for life and find each other each breeding season.  However, this pair have never produced any babies.  After some DNA tests were run, they discovered they were both females!  I guess  we can figure out why there were no babies!

Keep in mind – as far as we know, the trainers are still not actually going into the water and performing with the whales, as depcited in the video.  After the tragic accident involving Dawn Brancheau a couple of months ago, Sea World made the decision to cease in-water interactions between the whales and trainers until they were able to review their saftey procedures.

Sea World’s popular sea lion comedic duo takes the laughs into the night.  Hilarious hijinks ensue in the evening show as the park’s talented sea lions, otters and walrus parody other favorite Sea World shows and interactions.  This show is an industry favorite, with Sea World employees themselves looking forward to it every year!

Sea World Orlando Dolphins Doing Amazing Things

The playful creatures at Sea World Orlando, create the bubbles with their blowholes, then chase and swim through them.

Keepers of the bottle-nose dolphins, who live at Sea World Orlando, say the behaviour comes naturally to the animals, whose wild counterparts also blow bubbles.

“The blowhole is their nose and all they are doing is exhaling air through it under water and the bubble they create goes up to the surface and expands creating a ring.”

There are 18 dolphins living at the Sea World Orlando theme park, ranging in age from two to their late 20’s.

Mr Ramos-Nabariete, 46, added: “They all can blow bubbles, and there is no way of telling if one or more dolphins do this more than others, as the behaviour is unpredictable.

“Sometimes if the ring is large enough they will swim through the bubble almost as if they are showing off.

“Other times they will simply admire their work and mouth at it like a child who has frothed up a milkshake.”

Tourists who flock to see the dolphins are equally impressed.

“This was the first time that I have seen a dolphin let alone see them act in such a human manner,” said Sophie, from St Albans who is on holiday in the resort. “I feel very privileged to have seen such an intimate display.”
