Magic Kingdom Getting New Little Mermaid Ride

Walt Disney World is about to embark on a sweeping facelift for the Fantasyland section of the Magic Kingdom, in what the resort calls the biggest overhaul in the theme park’s 38-year history.

Plans revealed Saturday call for adding a lavish ride based on The Little Mermaid, expanding a popular Dumbo children’s attraction, new interactive areas featuring some of Disney’s best-known princesses, and more.

In addition, Disney said it plans to update Star Tours, the Star Wars-themed simulator ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with new 3-D effects.

The refurbished Star Tours will debut in 2011. The Fantasyland overhaul will be complete by 2013. Disney declined to say how much it will spend on the projects.

The twin announcements are a Disney World response to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the hugely anticipated project being built by rival Universal Studios Orlando in its Islands of Adventure theme park. Industry experts expect Wizarding World, a collection of attractions, shops and restaurants based on the novels by British author J.K. Rowling, to prove a huge draw when it opens in 2010; one that threatens to siphon attendance away from Disney.

But perhaps more importantly, said Robert Niles, publisher of theme park insider, Disney’s Fantasyland expansion could team with Universal’s Wizarding World in helping reignite overall travel to Orlando, which has slumped badly amid the global recession.

“There might be some Harry Potter fans who are waffling on the expense of trips to Orlando. But if you can throw in something new at Disney, maybe they’ll make the trip,” Niles said. “At this point, travel isn’t a zero sum game. They’ve got to get people on planes traveling again.”

To drive the expansion, Disney is turning to one of its most enduring and lucrative franchises: princesses. The vast majority of the Fantasyland overhaul will focus on Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and others in the company’s stable of animated heroines.

The biggest-ticket addition will be the Little Mermaid attraction, an enclosed ride that will carry guests through Ariel’s underwater realm. It will use an Omnimover ride system similar to that of the Haunted Mansion, and will move through scenes featuring characters and songs from the 1989 movie.

The ride, which has a working title of Under the Sea: Journey of The Little Mermaid, will be the same as one being built as part of the $1 billion overhaul of Disney’s California Adventure theme park in Anaheim, Calif., though the twin attractions will have different exteriors.

But what’s more, Disney World will construct individual areas — be it a castle, cottage or chateau — where guests can interact with some of the company’s best-known princesses and other characters from their movies. Children will be able to dance with Cinderella, celebrate Aurora’s birthday with the Good Fairies, or play a role with Belle in a performance in the library of the Beast’s castle.

The Beast’s castle, taken from the 1991 film Beauty and the Beast, will also include a three-room themed restaurant.

“Princesses are certainly one of Disney’s strengths. Obviously, there’s some limited appeal in terms of gender and age,” Niles, of theme park insider, said. “But anyone who’s had a young daughter knows they can be extremely persuasive.”

Chris Beatty, a senior concept designer with Walt Disney Imagineering, said a goal is to make the company’s iconic princesses appealing to a wider demographic. For example, some villains from the princesses’ movies will also be incorporated to help the area appeal to boys.

“We’re tailoring our experiences to kind of have that broad appeal,” Beatty said. “There’re just some great, classic stories, and we know for any guests that travel to the Magic Kingdom, that’s always one of the highlights.”

Beyond princesses, the plans call for doubling the size of and relocating Dumbo the Flying Elephant to a new “circus grounds” that will include an interactive queue under a big-top tent to entertain children waiting in line. Disney will add a new Pixie Hollow character-greeting area, home to Tinker Bell and other fairies.

To accommodate the expansion, Disney will raze most of Mickey’s Toontown Fair, the smallest of the Magic Kingdom’s “lands.” Gone will be both of the walk-through country houses where guests were guaranteed to meet Disney’s most famous characters: Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Disney says Mickey and Minnie will get new homes near the front entrance of the park. The children’s roller coaster, the Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm, will remain, though it will be re-themed, likely with a circus overlay linking it to Dumbo.

The first phase of the Fantasyland expansion, including the Mermaid ride and the princess areas, is scheduled to open in 2012. Pixie Hollow will follow in 2013.

For Star Tours, which debuted in Hollywood Studios in 1989, Disney plans to add new video and dialogue sequences recorded by George Lucas’ Lucasfilm studio. The updated 3-D effects will incorporate characters from the three Star Wars prequel films released between 1999 and 2005.

An identical Star Tours at Disneyland will also be upgraded.

Online Disney fan forums have been abuzz about a potential Fantasyland expansion for much of the summer, after blueprints were mysteriously leaked. Disney refused to comment on the plans for weeks, instead waiting to make the announcement at a fan convention this weekend in Anaheim.

Orlando Dinner Shows for the Family

Orlando dinner shows are on the rise. A little known fact is that Orlando, Florida has some of the most exciting Dinner Shows in the whole world and at a great discount. As you enter the Great Hall, family photos are taken with the themed background. Near the end of the show, the souvenir photos and photo key-chains are brought to your table, where you can choose to purchase them. The gift shop has a large selection of horse figures, cards, jewelry and many show mementos.

Pirates Dinner Adventure

Next is Pirates Dinner Show Adventure, located off of Carrier Dr. in Orlando, off of the famous International Drive strip. This is an action-packed dinner show that is as it sounds, full of Pirates and mischief. This show is a mix between Broadway and an actual shanghai. Pirates dinner show patrons are invited to participate and you are assigned a section that is represented by your team Pirate. When you arrive your are greeted by a friendly staff member for a photo and then you are escorted into the pre-show area. This area is a set that is designed to resemble a coastal colony and has period actors roaming and interacting with the guests while you snack on orderves.

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

Next is Medieval Times Dinner Show Orlando. Welcome to the 11th century! Just beyond their great doors of the Hall of Arms waits the celebration arena, the heart of each of Medieval Times nine castles. From high above King Philippe and his daughter-in-law, Princess Leonore, preside over a four-course feast. Below, privileged royal guests are transported to faraway lands including a romantic snowy rendezvous in the woods and an authentic medieval tournament for the Battle of Champion with the help of Hollywood-caliber special effects, of course.

Medieval Times dinner show is celebrating its 25-year reign in North America. Their founders first launched their unique idea for an 11th century-style dinner attraction on the Spanish island of Majorca in 1973. This imaginative new entertainment spot was inspired by the true medieval tradition of royal families inviting guests to a festival and feast to watch knights compete on horseback.

During the early years in Spain, the show’s authentic display of classic equestrian skills and medieval pageantry took place in outdoor arenas, a far cry from the climate-controlled castles of today. There, the conventions of today’s shows were established. Guests were seated in sections named for regions of Medieval Spain and encouraged to cheer for the Knight representing their region.

Next is  Sleuth’s Mystery Dinner Show. This dinner show has been around for quite awhile and has a fairly large return client list. If you have ever wanted to be inside a Clue game, then this is just up your alley. Dine on dinner while solving a mystery from the comfort of your set. Sleuths Mystery dinner show has many different acts and peform them nightly, so make sure to research the mystery that they will be performing the evening that you will be attending.

Makahiki Luau at Sea World

Lastly is probably my favorite, Sea World’s Makahaki Luau dinner show. Many visitors do not know that Sea World Orlando has one of the most exciting dinner shows in town. Sea World’s Makahiki Luau dinner show is located inside Sea World and resides inside the Sea Fire Grill. This beautifully done production is set to an authentic Polynesian luau and has all of the delicious entrees that accompany one. The Makahiki season was the Ancient Hawaiian New Year festival, in honor of the god Lono. It was a holiday covering four consecutive lunar months, approximately from October or November through February or March. Thus it might be thought of as including the equivalent of modern Thanksgiving and Christmas.

You are first welcomed by the actors of the show and are given a complimentary lei. You then are escorted into The Sea Fire Grill for a complimentary drink and are entertained by a fabulous Hawaiian musical group. Just before you get ready to enter, the drums and dancers start and this gets you right in the mood for a very special night.

The things that these pirates were doing were absolutely hair raising! The night ended with a delectable desert and the option of coffee and tea. As you leave the actors of Pirates Dinner Show are waiting to meet you, sign autographs and take pictures. After this you are welcomed back into the main gathering room for the Buccaneer Disco Party. We stayed and had a few more drinks while getting down with our team Pirate and a few other actors from the show. The Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner Show

Located in Wonder Works, The Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner Show has nightly showings, including unlimited pizza, salad, popcorn, beer, wine, soft drinks, and dessert!  The comedy show is great family fun and is perfect for families with smaller children.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Orlando Odditorium

Open 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. (Last Admission Sold at Midnight!) A trip through the odditorium is a self-guided experience which can last as long as you wish, although the average visit time is one to two hours.  Ripley’s includes amazing oddities, curious collections, world records, cool interactives, pranks of nature, illusions, and so much more!

Disney Tickets vs Flex Tickets

Many of you have asked me if Disney tickets with the multiday options are better than the Orlando Flex Tickets when vacationing here in Orlando. While the multi day Disney tickets with options can be a great way to save money, the Orlando Flex tickets have definitely become a central Florida favorite. There are two types of Flex tickets now to choose from.  First, there is the regular 14 day unlimited Flex tickets, that includes 14 days of unlimited access to Universal Studios Orlando, Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica and Wet n Wild. If you decide to visit Busch Gardens, then you can purchase the Flex Ticket Plus. This is the same ticket as mentioned above, but with Busch Gardens added. Free bus shuttle service to Busch Gardens is also included with the purchase of a Flex Ticket Plus.

Disney tickets with the extra options are a great way to save money as well and they have the added benifit of all being within the Walt Disney World Resort area. This means no driving all over town to expierence world class attractions. Does the company you are buying from have the Trust factor?

I am asked all the time if there are really discount tickets to all of central Florida’s theme parks and to the Orlando dinner shows and I always reply that, “Yes there is and no there is not”. If you are confused by this response then let me clarify it for you. Our company, The Official Ticket Center, sells only discount attraction tickets to all of Florida’s world famous theme parks without and stipulations or catches. I personally believe that this is a dirty tactic and the customer only realizes this at the very end of their shopping expierence. Always ask if the taxes are included before you buy anything. I can think of a few top websites that do not include taxes and I personally believe that they are misleading the shoppers and making them very angry.
